Women, Girls, and Gender Justice

We are dedicated to advancing safety and healing for survivors of gender-based and intimate partner violence, while supporting pathways to success for women and girls.

We are dedicated to advancing safety and healing for survivors of domestic violence and related forms of gender-based violence, such as sexual violence, human trafficking, stalking, and intimate partner violence.

We build multiple pathways to prevent, respond to, and heal from gender-based and family violence. We do this by interrupting cycles of trauma, helping parents provide emotional and material support for their children, supporting at-risk families with intensive services to prevent involvement in family court and the child welfare system, and ensuring that anyone, regardless of gender, has access to opportunities and resources.

History

The Center for Justice Innovation helped pioneer new responses to domestic violence through the creation of specialized domestic violence courts that prioritize safety for victims and accountability for those who perpetrate violence. Our teams worked across New York and around the country in the late 1990s to seed this new approach, also pioneering Integrated Domestic Violence Courts, which improved and streamlined survivors’ interactions with the legal system by placing both criminal and family matters—including parental rights, child visitation and child support—before a single judge.

Gun violence and intimate partner violence are often viewed as separate problems that require different responses, but neighborhoods impacted by high rates of gun violence also have the highest levels of reported domestic violence incidents. Access to a gun makes it five times more likely that a partner experiencing abuse will be killed. Our RISE Project works at this critical intersection. Learn more about their work below.
