Bronx Community Solutions offers meaningful alternatives to jail and incarceration, helping participants address their underlying needs, rebuild relationships, and contribute to the well-being of their communities.

With offices in the Bronx’s centralized criminal courthouse and the south Bronx community, Bronx Community Solutions offers solutions to community harm that respond to needs, support accountability, and improve the wellness of the borough. We do this by offering meaningful alternatives to the traditional legal system, centering the needs and dignity of our participants, and building lasting connections with the community.

Alternative Sentencing Reduces Reliance on Jail

Research shows that providing alternative sentencing options to judges reduces reliance on jail. Bronx Community Solutions offers a menu of people-centered programming options designed to address issues such as substance use disorders, employment and family service needs, and mental health for misdemeanor and felony cases. Our team uses evidence-based screening tools to ensure participants are connected to resources and interventions responding to their specific needs. Social service sessions cover topics such as workforce readiness, anger management, harm reduction, youth mentorship, and drivers accountability, among others. Programming is offered in both Spanish and English. In addition to group programming, case management or individual counseling sessions are available with a clinician.

Treatment Alternatives Program (TAP)

In partnership with the Bronx Criminal Court, Bronx Community Solutions gives people charged with misdemeanor and felony offenses the opportunity to resolve their criminal case by participating in meaningful, community-based services. Reaching individuals both with and without a guilty plea, the Treatment Alternatives Program tailors services to each participant based on their unique needs as well as the nature of their charges. Services offered may include mental health care, substance use treatment and overdose prevention resources, support with employment and education, and more.

Early Diversion

Bronx Community Solutions offers two programs designed to provide an early off-ramp to the criminal legal system for low-level misdemeanors. By engaging in services post-arrest, participants avoid having to enter the traditional court process and the possibility of a criminal record. Project Reset offers eligible participants who have received a desk-appearance ticket for a low-level misdemeanor the opportunity to resolve their arrest through a restorative circle in the Bronx community supported by trained facilitators and community volunteers. Similarly, under the Bronx HOPE program, eligible participants arrested for substance use related charges meet with peers with lived experience at the precinct to receive harm reduction education and connections to resources or treatment services. By participating in pre-arraignment diversion programming, participants avoid the collateral consequences of contact with the court system or a criminal record.

Community Improvement

Participants make meaningful contributions to transformative projects within their community throughout the Bronx. Our staff work with residents and community groups to identify neighborhood projects that respond to local needs. Our partners also offer our participants resources and new points of community connection.
