Community Justice 2016
Last week, the Center for Court Innovation and the U.S. Department of Justice's Bureau of Justice Assistance convened Community Justice 2016, an international summit dedicated to improving safety, reducing the use of jail, and promoting trust in justice.
More than 400 people, representing more than 110 jurisdictions, attended the conference. As part of her keynote address, Bureau of Justice Assistance Director Denise O’Donnell announced the winners of the 2016 community court grant program, which supports the creation and enhancement of community-focused courts across the United States. Each of the following jurisdictions will receive a $200,000 grant: Cleveland, Ohio; Eugene, Oregon; Honolulu, Hawaii; Jersey City, New Jersey; Las Vegas, Nevada; Olympia, Washington; Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Cook County, Illinois; Dallas County, Texas; and Spokane, Washington.
The summit featured presentations from a diverse group of reformers, including Judge Victoria Pratt of Newark Community Solutions and Judge Alex Calabrese of the Red Hook Community Justice Center, who talked about how they have adapted procedural justice principles in their courtrooms. Other speakers covered a broad range of topics including innovations in jail reduction, restorative justice, risk/needs assessment, and substance abuse treatment.
