DV RISC: A New Resource to Prevent Domestic Violence Homicides
This Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the Center for Court Innovation launched DVRISC.org, a national resource center designed to reduce risk and prevent homicide in intimate partner violence cases.
Did you know that nearly half of female murder victims and one in 13 male murder victims are killed by intimate partners? For more than two decades, the Center for Court Innovation has worked in New York and across the country to strengthen court and community responses to domestic violence. But for so many victims, the response comes tragically too late.
Funded by the U.S. Department of Justice’s Office on Violence Against Women, our strategy includes a new website providing resources and support for those working to reduce risk and prevent homicide in intimate partner violence cases.
Effectively addressing domestic violence homicide means looking beyond the legal system and engaging the entire community. Multidisciplinary teams that include police, prosecutors, victim advocates, and others now have a centralized resource to access tools, training, and subject matter experts to help them identify and work with victims at highest risk of being killed.
To ensure that the needs of survivors are met, an advisory board of survivors of intimate partner violence gives leadership, input and guidance, elevating and centering the voices of those with lived experience with domestic violence.
