Statement About the Assault on the Capitol
Yesterday was an ugly day for America.
The insurrection—incited by President Trump with lies and his refusal to accept the results of a democratic election—was a vile rebuke to truth, equity, and democracy. We are sickened by the blatant racism on display in the symbols carried by rioters and in the permissive police response. That the mob was able to storm the Capitol with minimal resistance or consequences stands in sharp contrast to the way police have responded to Black Lives Matter protests across the country, including nearby in Washington, D.C.'s, Lafayette Square.
At the Center for Court Innovation, we believe institutions matter and governments can change for the better. Yesterday's horrifying events prove that change is coming too slowly. We stand with those who demand a system that safeguards democracy and the rights of all Americans, including Black and brown citizens and those of all races and backgrounds, to vote. We will continue to work to excise white supremacy and racism from our justice, law enforcement, and legal systems. We must ensure our nation lives up to its promises of fairness and racial justice.
