The Brooklyn Treatment Court links defendants with substance use disorders to treatment as an alternative to incarceration.
The Court's key features include:
Screening
Taking cases from all of Brooklyn, the Treatment Court works with defendants facing felony drug charges whose cases have been screened by the District Attorney's Office.
Treatment Recommendation
Using a thorough psycho-social assessment, case managers from the Treatment Court make treatment recommendations and refer participants to community-based partners.
Monitoring
Participants report back to the court at regular intervals on their progress in treatment. The court is guided by the understanding that relapses are frequently part of the recovery process, and the judge uses a system of graduated incentives and sanctions to help guide participants toward recovery and law-abiding behavior.
Alumni Bureau
Treatment Court graduates may join the Alumni Bureau, where they are encouraged to stay in touch with the court and help support new clients.
