Red Hook CARES (Counseling and Restorative Services)
Red Hook CARES fosters a healthier and more resilient community by offering safe, accessible, free, and confidential services to all.
Red Hook CARES (Counseling and Restorative Services) is a community-based program at the Red Hook Community Justice Center that serves individuals who have experienced crime or violence in their homes or communities.
The CARES program serves people of all ages and genders who have witnessed or experienced violence, including assault; childhood abuse; community violence; intimate partner violence; domestic violence; elder abuse; homicide; robbery; sexual abuse and assault; and stalking.
Staff provide a range of client-centered and trauma-informed services that empower participants to achieve stability, safety, and healing in their lives. These services include individual and group counseling; risk assessment and safety planning; support and advocacy in navigating the court system; assistance with emergency housing transfers, orders of protection and public benefits; assistance with victim compensation claims; and referrals to community resources. Services are offered onsite at the Justice Center, as well as at the Justice Center’s neighborhood office, located just blocks away within Red Hook’s public housing development.
CARES works in close partnership with court and community stakeholders, receiving referrals from a wide range of partners such as the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office, New York Police Department, New York City Housing Authority, local schools, and other community-based organizations. In addition to supporting individual clients, program staff organize workshops and events throughout the community to educate the public on issues such as identifying and preventing domestic violence, healthy relationships, trauma and self-care.
