Eviction Moratorium Extended, Keeping Families Safely Housed

With the state still lagging in distributing billions of dollars in federal rental assistance funds, many households remain vulnerable. The pandemic has made clear in stark terms the importance of a safe place to call home.

Since 2001, the Center for Court Innovation has launched housing court reforms and helped tenants navigate eviction proceedings, connecting them with benefits, legal services, and working to address maintenance and repair issues. Eviction prevention is a key focus of our work to keep people and families safely housed.

With two decades of experience working with communities and in housing court, we quickly adjusted to the limitations imposed by COVID-19.

• In Harlem, Help Center staff went mobile, traveling to New York City Housing Authority developments and partnering with tenant associations to assist with lease recertifications and ensuring affordability for tenants facing loss of income.
• In the Red Hook neighborhood of Brooklyn, staff went door-to-door connecting with tenants and helping them navigate hazardous repairs and chronic gas and water outages.
• In Brownsville, Brooklyn, and Syracuse, N.Y., staff have been helping tenants apply for rental assistance.
   

When the eviction moratorium ultimately lifts on January 15, many tenants will continue to face financial and other stresses. As people in New York and across the country face this next phase, we will continue directly serving the most impacted tenants and advocating to ensure safe and secure affordable housing.
