Statement on Justice for Tyre Nichols
The death of Tyre Nichols at the hands of Memphis police officers is an event that is tragically familiar to all of us.
Tyre Nichols was a son and father with his whole life ahead of him. His death, at the hands of Memphis police officers, is an event that is tragically familiar to all of us. Seventy-nine people have been killed by police in 2023 already, after a decade-long high of police killings in 2022.*
Justice for Tyre Nichols does not only mean holding those involved, who took an oath to protect and serve, accountable. It also means rooting out the systemic racism that has caused incalculable harm to Black individuals and communities, and building a public safety system that is truly fair, transparent, and humane.
